In March 2025, Shopify took a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrency payments. The company Mesh launched a crypto payments app in the Shopify App Store, enabling over five million merchants to accept cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
The payments are automatically converted into stablecoins such as USDC, USDT, or PYUSD, minimizing volatility risks for merchants. This move demonstrates how crypto is gaining traction as a payment option in mainstream eCommerce.
One early adopter of this technology is PawCo Foods, a healthy dog food provider that now accepts crypto payments via Mesh. The integration of Mesh's SmartFunding technology allows customers to pay with their preferred cryptocurrency while merchants receive stable assets.
Although Shopify has not yet directly confirmed Bitcoin payments as part of its core offerings, these partnerships and technological advances signal the company's growing interest in digital currencies for eCommerce. Merchants on Shopify can already benefit from crypto payments by leveraging available apps and integrations, with further developments likely in the near future.
